What should I do about my attraction?
2023.03.25 23:38 Any-Discussion-5934 What should I do about my attraction?
I am black, grew up in a 95% black country. But as far I can remember my primary attraction was always mostly towards white men, as a kid my first celebrity crush was Kevin Costner and I wanted to be Whitney Houston and so on.
I started to have sex at an early age, I knew I always wanted to bottom but I never really enjoyed it. When I told other bottom friends that bottoming was always painful no matter what the size and the guy expertise they never understood why(me either).
The first time I got insanely crazy about sex was with a 42 years old French white guy, I was 21. when he stopped talking to me I went through a depression (didn’t know what depression was until recently), it lasted almost a year. It was the first time I felt like needing a man in my entire existence. My entourage could see me suffering but couldn’t put a finger on it.
2 years later I met my Belgian white boyfriend we were together for 3 years( the happiest years of my life). He made me discover myself, my sexuality, my identity, gave me the best sex I ever had. And with him I started to collect the dots that I only feel that intense emotion and connection only with white men.
Before him I already had sex with more than 70 guys by the age of 23, and only 1 black guy gave me enjoyable painless sex. I could get fucked multiple times a day by him and only feel pleasure while the others were mostly painful.
After him I dated a Latin guy for almost a year, I was madly in love with him, but it’s now that I recognize that I was in love with who he was but sex was never really that great, most of the time I ended up bleeding during penetration, I gave him sex cause I was horny and he wanted but not because it was enjoyable.
Moved to the US in 2017, I had a lot of sex with every ethnicity, there were always the same pattern, most of white guys give me painless sex while with the other non whites were extremely painful with me bleeding.
2020 was THE COUP DE GRACE, met that British guy with 9 inches, we fuck always without lube, no pain involved at all, never enjoyed getting fucked like that, it felt like a drug, my whole body was at his mercy, no gag reflex, no repulsion. He was shocked seeing how easily I took his cock everywhere, lockdown came and he became distant.. went through a severe clinical depression and anxiety, I’m still on medication….
My therapist did a throughout job, we found out that my attraction to white men is not even comparable to other ethnic groups. And that I’m also only happy in relationships while my body counts is over 500.
Now I hate myself, I don’t see a way out of it when living in a country where white guys see u as a useless cumdump. While European guys are so considerate, respectful, don’t treat you like disposable garbage for their last option. It’s becoming increasingly unsustainable at this point and I don’t see any light at the end of the tunnel

2023.03.25 23:33 iexistandthatisit why darkness devil vs gojo isn't even close
Darkness devil vs gojo because people on tiktok said gojo negs(I have nothing better to do)
Stats
Darkness devil
Speed
Blitzing quanxi
https://imgur.com/a/P0NLXcp Like literally I don't think speed blitzing any of them besides quanxi puts him anywhere relevant since they are all fodder in comparison
Quanxi speed calc
https://vsbattles.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:Drite77/Chainsaw_man:_Quanxi_kills_a_fuck_ton_of_people . She should be a decent amount higher but nothing i can really guarantee. I've heard some calc this at mach 200 but that doesn't seem consistent considering the calcs I've seen for the gun devil and the high esteem it's held at.
Comparison between primal fears and gun devil
https://imgur.com/a/qD9RNsc it should make it consistent that the primal fear> gun devil in raw stats at least. especially considering the fact they call him "some gun devil" when comparing him to the primal fears
Bullets traveling 500km in 1 second from the gun devil(I forgot to include the scan that states their distance, if you ask ill give it though)
https://imgur.com/a/7ExZ47u Considering how weak the gun devil is portrayed when stacked up to any primal fear it shouldn't be radical to assume the darkness devil would scale above the gun devil's bullets in speed. This was only a 20% gun devil so logically assuming the gun devil was shooting its bullets as fast as it could, the 100% gun devil would be able to shoot bullets at mach 7285(5x1457). So the darkness devil should upscale even this.
Strength
The gun devil spawning in calc
https://vsbattles.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:Shmeatywerbenmanjenson/Gun_Devil%27s_Crater_(Re-calc) This puts the darkness devil, casually at city block level. This calc is done by observing the damage to the trees around it. There is no reason to assume someone happened to be in that specific area so it had no reason to attack and likely didn't.
Calc for gun devil damage to japan
https://imgur.com/a/pdxg6EZ . The gun devil takes 26 seconds for small city level, darkness devil>gun devil. 26 seconds of the darkness devil attacks> small city level.
The difference between fiends and devil's is crazy, power is absolute trash but the blood devil can shit on makima in a direct fight(makima would win due to crazy hax but still). Gun fiends can shoot large building level attacks. Darkness devil should be so so so so so much more powerful than this.
Durability
Durability should=strength unless proven otherwise.
Gojo
Speed
Hakari reaction speed calc
https://vsbattles.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:PowerToScale/Jujutsu_Kaisen:_Hakari_Dodges_Lightning.
This puts his reaction speed above mach 4760.Gojo is called the ceiling of the jjk verse so he should have a higher reaction speed than this
Maki reaction to bullet calc
https://character-stats-and-profiles.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:Thelastvastolorde/Maki_catches_bullet_(Jujutsu_Kaisen) Calced at mach 20. I've also heard this feature consistently being put at mach 50 so mach 20-mach 50 should be around where it scales. Once again gojo upscale this. So from this gojo would have above mach 20 reaction speed
Naoya mach 3 statement
https://imgur.com/a/PZNGNfu First movement speed feat I've mentioned. Puts gojo's movement speed above mach 3.
Strength
All relevant jjk calcs
https://vsbattles.fandom.com/wiki/User_blog:PowerToScale/Jujutsu_Kaisen:_Various_Feats This has all the important ones besides 1 of them gojo upscales them all.
Yuji sent through a wall by finger bearer, calced at building level.
mechamaru's ultimate cannon is put at city block level.
Jogo's meteor is put at large town level.
The only one gojo shouldn't upscale would be sukuna's "explosion" during chapter 119. Aka his domain expansion. Calced at large mountain level, the reason gojo shouldn't scale to this is simply because domains, unless made clear or stated otherwise, are meant to be either a one shot kill or guaranteed kill. Nothing shown would dispute this as well
Jogo has another calc putting him at large mountain level too. With his domain but once again gojo wouldn't scale to that
Large town level
Durability.
Strength=Durability, so large town level
Hax
Darkness devil
Darkness devil's hax list
https://imgur.com/a/NZ6w3Mx First limb cutting thing. Judging by the blood on the limbs we see in other panels, he is cutting off their arms, not just popping them off. Potentially just him speed blitzing and cutting em off as opposed to a hax.
Angel is a devil, devils can heal but angel permanently loses his arms in this encounter. Regen negging. The only people who rege. From these are immortal beings or those who have a way of avoiding death(hybrids and makima)
Once someone tries to use the stone devil, the darkness devil summons the stone devil to him and marks him on the spot. Can temporarily other to himself and potential crumble them(might just be because it was the stone devil)
He points at beam and dismembers him. Pretty crazy shit.
He puts holes in the violence fiend by chanting.
He used some ability to twist Dennji's limbs around.
He summoned a sword through the violence fiend.
He contorted Makima's arm by doing nothing.
He uses the frog rabbit thing to tear off the spider devil's limbs. There was no blood so this is was most likely a hax
Gojo
Gojo's hax list
https://imgur.com/a/SPyAxpv I forgot to include it but he has the six eyes. The main thing, though the only thing that won't be mentioned going forward is it giving gojo, effectively, Infinite stamina and energy.
Reverse cursed technique works like regen.
Infinity prevents contact between him and anything else
Blue works as an ability to pull whatever gojo needs close
He also has the other version of blue, that works like a black hole that can suck up its surroundings
He has red which has double the energy of blue and is an attack that explodes whatever it hits backwards with insane force
Purple or hollow purple is an attack that uses matter manipulation to ignore whatever is in its path's durability to destroy it atomically.
I also forgot about his domain that effectively guarantee stuns whatever Is inside of it
A Lot of these are way more complicated than what I explained but I boiled in down to how they work in a battle
How the fight goes
In my opinion this is a wash.
First of all the darkness devil casually scales above the gun devil 100% that would have a greater speed feat than anything anyone in jjk has shown to even be able to react to.
He doesn't need to pierce infinity as even pointing at someone can dismember them and as he shows against angel, he negs regen.
He can cause intense external bleeding and spawn put holes in people's bodies as shown against beam.
As shown against spider he doesn't need to cut off limbs, he can just remove them.
As shown against makima he can crumble limbs as well all while, again, negging regen
Now before everyone says "oh but hollow purple" "oh but domain expansion" "oh but the black hole feat"
First of all, the mass yuki gains from spending cursed energy>cursed energy spent. That is why she enforces her attack with her technique more than just regular cursed energy, that is why despite having less cursed energy output than Ryu and less cursed energy than yuta, she has shown to hit dramatically harder. She shouldn't at all scale to the back hole itself physically nor should anyone else. Kenjaku only survived due to tengen, yuki, and himself suppressing it. Nobody scale to it
Gojo isn't going to get a chance to use his techniques. As soon as the darkness devil plopped down it immediately removed everyone's arms, without arms gojo can't use either purple nor his domain.
Even if it uses one of its other abilities that don't need to travel, gojo is almost guaranteed fucked. He points and gojo falls apart, he can will it and gojo's entire body contorts, he speaks and spawns holes in gojo, he causes gojo intense internal bleeding by looking at him.
Again all of this negs regen.
Gojo has no answer to anything in the darkness devil's artillery. Even in terms of speed, the darkness devil would be even faster than anyone in jjk has shown to be able to react to.
In conclusion, darkness devil negs gojo, low diff at best

2023.03.25 23:13 Shin-kun1997 [SF] Epsilon’s Trial
I'd love to have some critiques and feedback as I plan to publish this into something real at some point. This is also a draft. Many thanks With heavy shoulders slumped, Sebastian Pasquet walked through the door of his house and kicked off his shoes, dropping the suitcase and hanging up his jacket. The turtleneck shirt he wore was covered in specs of dust and dirt, all of which emerged from today's earlier events.
“Ugh. I swear this position is gonna drive me into the bloody ground.” he grunted in a thick English accent. “I’m home.”
His voice caught the attention of a woman dressed in a blue shirt and apron, her hair was a dark silver and her eyes were violet, but her most defining features were a pair of cat-like ears protruding from her head, as well as a tail that stretched down to her feet.
She walked towards him and instantly embraced him in a hug, causing him to drop the suitcase. He didn’t care and simply returned the love, pushing his lips against hers as he smirked. Greeting him was his wife, Alvia. A Felis from the planet Eria some 230,000,000 kilometers from Fiore.
A world with the lowest population in Eridani at 2.5 billion inhabited by a shy, peaceful race that, while possessing spaceflight and the ability to travel through jump space, had no off world settlements apart from their moon.
“Welcome back.” she said as her tail curved around his leg. “I missed you so much. It’s five thirty by the way, don’t you usually get out by four?”
“There was an accident on one of the launch pads that needed attention.”
“Oh my, I hope no one was hurt.”
“Don’t worry, it was an unmanned test. No crew on board.”
“Ah, great. Well my love, your hard day's work is over for the time being.” She pecked his cheek once more. “Come on, dinner’s almost finished.”
He stepped into the living room where a young boy was sitting on the floor reading a children's book. The area was designed with a modern and cozy aesthetic with the TV embedded in the wall, an L-shaped couch at the center, and family portraits stacked across a nearby table. One of them depicted Sebastian five years ago in his EVA suit, taken just before launch.
His seven year old son, Jeremy, greeted him with a hug. While he resembled a younger version of himself, he’d been born a Felis just like Alvia, inheriting his mothers ears and tail.
“Hey kiddo.” Sebastian said, picking him up and scratching behind his ears. “What’d you do all day?”
“I got to help mom with dinner.” he replied, in a cheery voice. “Oh, Dad, are we still gonna go to the expo? Mari said she’s going with her parents.”
Jeremy had been referring to the Interstellar Aerospace Expo of 2273, which was to be held on the planet Vandam in two months. The annual thirteen day long convention where space companies, private initiatives, and anti-gravity racers from all across Eridani gathered to celebrate the one thing they all shared in common; flying.
“Of course we are.” Sebastian replied. “But were you good in school today?”
His son nodded.
“Then, I’ll be sure to take you to the anti-gravity race when we go.”
Jeremy cheered at his reply. Upon putting him down, Alvia directed him to wash his hands before dinner. He watched Jeremy head up the stairs towards the bathroom as his wife placed her head against his shoulder.
“I swear, he can’t stop talking about that event.” she said.
Changing into a t-shirt he plopped onto the couch and turned the TV on just in time to witness a news report taking place. A story discussing a recent development regarding an unknown object floating within space, specifically the Strain Belt, the massive asteroid belt that separated Fiore from Eris. The screen then switched to a photograph taken within the belt via a satellite, depicting a violet light within a field of asteroids. As his wife sat beside him Sebastian became puzzled at the story, his mind curious as to what the supposed entity could be.
“I read this somewhere earlier. Some are just saying it could be a comet.” Alvia said.
“But what kind of comet stays in the exact same place?” he replied. “It’s probably a defunct probe that’s reached its end.”
Alvia shrugged her shoulders as Sebastian began to massage her ears, which she loved a lot. “Maybe. So, how was today apart from the accident you mentioned?”
“Sorting through paperwork. Supersiving vehicle operation. In short, horrifying.”
“Aw, my peach sounds like he’s been through too much. It’s been two years now since you’ve had this position, director of the astronaut corps.”
“It has its perks. I get to fly in those fancy spaceliners for business trips across the planet or to the moon.”
“Oh? Then maybe you can book us a nice getaway towards those fancy beach hotels.” Sebastian rolled his eyes and smiled at her answer. Alvia slowly raised her head and pressed her lips against his once more, giving Sebastian the go ahead to massage her tail.
“Ew, yuck!”
The two ceased their advances immediately upon hearing the voice of their son in front of them. There, Jeremy stood, mocking his parents' act of love causing the two of them to laugh. When all was said and done they walked towards the kitchen where dinner was served, the entire time Sebastian was subjected to Jeremy’s rambling about the exposition.
The next day Sebastian found himself quickly jogging through the halls of Ophir Space Complex, the campus-sized facility that managed all launches and missions of the company. He arrived at the designated meeting room and was greeted by the sight of James sitting at the head of an oval-shaped mahogany table. Beside him were Romero and Alex as well, all dressed in matching suit attire.
Sebastian noticed at the table center a hologram of the planet Fiore, which was odd because this room didn’t have that feature the previous day.
“Sorry if I’m late. Had to drop my son off at school and traffic was impatient on the way back.” Sebastian said, taking his seat.
“Not at all mate. We’re waiting on a few more actually.” Romero replied, shaking Sebastian's hand. “How is your boy anyway?”
“Excited for the expo, that’s for sure. Says some of his friends are going too.”
“Same for me and my little girl.” Alex added. “I hear that there’s going to be a Human vs. Astrean anti-gravity prix.”
“How much do you want to bet they’ll kick our arses?”
Eventually several other suited men stepped into the room and upon closing the door, took their seats and greeted Sebastian and his colleagues.
“Good. Now that everyone’s here, let's get this meeting started.” Romero proclaimed. “To begin, what is on the schedule for this month in terms of the new models?”
“Fortunately the accident yesterday was only minor and the damage was menial, the engineers over at our plant in Harriet are repairing it as we speak.” Alex replied. “Construction on two other prototypes are underway as we speak.”
“Will it be ready in time for the exposition?” another man asked.
“We believe so. With a little more time.”
“More time? The event is in two months and we have yet to present anything to the board and CEO. If we don’t procure results fast we’ll be coming in fifth place for the fourth year in a row.”
“Easy now, I’m sure our engineers here are on the case. Yesterday’s mishap has not slowed us down before, and it will not slow us down again.”
The hologram at the center suddenly switched to a star map of Eridani, displaying all barren and inhabited worlds within the star system, including the eight planets humanity resided on. Their names were shown just below the tiny sphere they represented.
Daphne. Rhea. Nova. Antari. Freya. Cascade. . And his own planet, Fiore.
Soon after, a hologram of the spacecraft in question appeared at the center of the map as well. Sebastian was silent for the most part, somewhat annoyed at the constant bickering between the old men.
“The model comes in one and two seater variants we’ve labeled as the Ichinose-class. Its nickname is Epsilon.” Alex spoke. “We were implementing a two engine propulsion system that not only propels the ship forward, but provides power for the rest of the ship. Sebastian, wanna give the rundown?”
He nodded, shifting everyone's attention to the TV display on the wall which now showed a diagram of the ship.
“Our spacecraft compared to Astreans, while advanced, are relatively primitive in their eyes. Well at least in terms of design and architecture. Astreans ships use deuterium and tritium to power their reactors while we use deuterium and helium-3, with liquid hydrogen remaining as the primary fuel source. But what makes Epsilon different is its engines.”
“Oh?” another man said.
“Typically, our vehicles employ chemically fueled aerospike plasma engines, the newer engines you’re seeing here are fusion powered and designed to not only provide direct thrust, but power to the spacecraft altogether.”
Each of the men’s eyes widened at Sebastians response. Such a design for a spacecraft was unproven on Fiore, but the concept and practicality was very much real. In fact most companies and organizations on other human worlds had recently fielded such designs. Sebastian continued.
“Speed is also another factor we’ve looked over. A typical trip from Fiore to Eris in this planetary system will take around 7 hours. These engines can cut that flight down to just 2.5 hours of non-stop travel. Especially when you consider that it takes 5 hours to get to the Strain Belt.”
The men then began conversing amongst themselves at Sebastians statement. While some of them were supportive of the concept of lower trips across the interplanetary medium, others were skeptical. When asked if the engines were tested with astronauts Sebastian shook his head.
“I haven’t assigned anyone to fly it as of yet, but rest assured the tests are coming back with many positive results.”
“Positive, but unmanned,” he replied. “If this were to fail, the amount of bad publicity would damage our reputation for years to come. We cannot proceed further without human ratings.”
Sebastian sighed to himself as he grunted, the men of the table chatting back and forth about the safety and possible outcomes the fusion engines would provide. He tried to find the words to say to appease the table but their corporate tone, mildly annoying political voices hindered that effort. For the past several minutes the meeting continued, with two sides discussing both the pros and cons of having such a design. Finally, after seemingly an eternity of old men debating over coffee as his wife put it, he slammed a hand on the table causing Alex to flinch. Standing from his seat, all eyes were now trained on him.
“Enough. All this bickering is not getting us anywhere. If you want results, I’ll fly the damn ship myself.”
As if coming to some horrendous realization the table's members simply stared at Sebastian upon his closing statement. For his part, Sebastian was set on fulfilling the test operation. Further explaining that he would assign himself to a manned test of the vehicle as soon as possible.
“I’m not so sure that would be an appropriate move, as the astronaut office head you’re responsible for ensuring launch vehicles are up to company standards.”
“And what better way to do that than from inside the said vehicle?” Sebastian replied. “Look, everyone in both corporate and engineering is under a lot of stress and worrying about our place at the exposition. I can put all those to rest with a simple interplanetary flight to Eria.”
“I agree.” Alex added. “Sebastian is one of the more experienced pilots in the program as well, especially when you look at his resume.”
Silence filled the room. The diagram of the engine disappeared from the screen as Sebastian took his seat once more, their eyes wandering back and forth as if lost in thought and trying to find counter arguments. As it became evident that there were no further words to say, one of the men had taken a piece of paper and began writing.
“I will take it to the board then,” he said. “If we’re talking about a spaceflight, then might we add an extra task?”
When Sebastian arrived at the Strain Belt he was fast at work, enjoying the wilderness of space that he’d spent so long away from. A week had passed and he was installing one of many beacons along a column of asteroids, his EVA circulating oxygen and maintaining a stable body temperature. He had departed Fiore a few hours earlier after taking Jeremy to school and kissing his wife goodbye, now conducting a mission which included not only working out any of Epsilon’s bugs, but locating an interstellar object which had been spotted by a company space probe.
Sebastian jumped from the asteroid and floated back towards Epsilon where the airlock was still open. Pressurizing the interior he assumed control of the vehicle and used the thrusters to gently move into more open space. The thick concentration of asteroids surrounding him resembled a field of death, something no human without the proper experience should be able to survive.
While the ship's hull was sturdy, Sebastian had to maintain constant caution. His senses were on full alert even from inside the safety of the ship. The occasional bumps along the exterior would cause any inexperienced pilot to flinch, but Epsilon was made of some of the best titanium Fiore had. As he arrived at the signal's location Sebastian found himself cast into a sea of dark, the sun barely shining through the asteroids that circled him.
“I can’t see it yet.” he said to himself. “The news showed that thing to be a bright violet light, but where would it be?”
After floating through the belt for several minutes he was caught by the flash of a bright light, the familiar violet color from the news made its appearance known again. Activating Epsilon’s fusion engines Sebastian sped towards the light as it began to vanish as quickly as it came. He turned on the spacecraft's exterior lights to get a full view of what was before him.
“Holy crap…”
His eyes took a moment to register what everyone at the space center assumed it to be. A large horizontal object with a shape almost like an oversized satellite with a rod attached to the end, two flat extensions resembling solar panels, and a round dome that covered its opposite end. In fact its shape and various extensions gave it the appearance of a small space station.
“Control, I think I’ve found it.” Sebastian said through comms. “These markings along the side, those definitely aren’t human made.”
“We read you Epsilon. Are you saying what we’re all thinking?”
“Yeah. This thing is definitely of Xanadu origin.”
The sound of applause could be heard at the end of the radio. Sebastian smirked as he leaned back in his seat upon discovering one of thousands, if not millions of different advanced ancient technologies spread throughout the Milky Way. After relaying the artifact’s location and back to Fiore, his celebration abruptly ended when an alarm began to sound. Glancing at the radar beneath him he spotted two red dots, each representing ships, heading for his position. Sensing something was wrong Sebastian quickly displayed an enhanced frame of the space before him, what he could see were two low grade spacecraft flying towards his position.
“Aw crap.” Sebastian said, activating the engines. “Control, we’ve got a problem. I’ve got a band of Outcast pirates on my plate now.”
“Well would you look at that.” one of them spoke through comms. “Looks like we’ve got ourselves a butterfly trapped in a thorn bush. No biggie, you hand over that structure there and things don’t have to go south.”
Sebastian sighed. “It was hard enough having to navigate through this freaking death field. Now I have scumbags like you in my schedule? Geeze it just ain’t my day.”
“What was that?!” One of the ships activated their weapons systems.
“Did I stutter? I called you a bunch of low life trash bags who’re probably too stupid to know how a coffee maker works.”
Before he knew it, a concentrated beam of energy came flying through the asteroid field. Using Epsilon’s powerful thrusters Sebastian was only barely able to dodge it. He gripped the stick and began to fly forwards into the fray. To maintain his stability Sebastian had to keep the fusion engine's velocity at a minimum so as to not crash into any asteroids, or worse, the pirates spacecraft.
“Looks like this butterfly’s been reading too many fantasies. Let’s show em who’s in charge around here!”
He soon found one of the ships now tailing him. Another stream of energy zipped past his ship and grazed the side of the hull plating, setting off another alarm Sebastian quickly silenced. Activating Epsilon's energy shields he quickly formulated a plan in order to gain the upper hand. Despite being a prototype, Epsilon was equipped with defenses including a directed energy weapon and four missiles stored in a lower chamber.
“Damn. If this keeps up I’ll run out of fuel before I can even plan for the expo’s entrance.” he said to himself, scoffing. “No matter, I’ve got a few tricks of my own.”
As he piloted Epsilon through the dense field he remained calm and collected, knowing that fear and panic would only make the situation much more dire. A common aspect all astronauts followed when venturing in or far from Eridani. Paranoia would only spell certain demise. Sebastian circled another set of rocks before raising his altitude, catching the tailing ship off guard. The ship slammed into the side of the asteroid at an intense velocity. Engulfing the ship in a silent explosion as the flames vanished.
“One down, one more to go.” Sebastian said. “Hm?”
He stabilized his altitude and ceased all movement to find the last remaining pirate ship before him; it was a few thousand feet away but close enough for Sebaatian to see. Strangely it made no attempts to move, no communication from its crew, all he could see was the low-budget ship flash a red light from its bridge area occasionally.
“What the heck are they doing…?”
Sebastian realized too late. Within several seconds his spacecraft's systems suddenly began to go haywire, the electricity malfunctioning and life support beginning to fail. Putting on his helmet Sebastian quickly maneuvered Epsilon out of view from the Outcasts using what little power from the spacecraft's backup systems he had. He’d been hit with an EMP.
“We’ve got him. Finish him off so we can claim our prize.”
Sebastian began to assess the situation as the pirate's spacecraft hovered towards him, the Outcast fired another stream of energy towards Epsilon causing the ship's hull to deteriorate. Using the thrusters Sebastian shifted behind an asteroid to avoid another oncoming stream of energy. Several minutes had passed with Epsilon sneaking around the Outcast ship and avoiding whatever attacks it could. Eventually the two ships found themselves coming within range of a pocket of controlled space within the Strain Belt, Sebastian could spot the orbital infrastructure that made up Ophir Strait. One of only two clear paths of the Strain Belt that served as a trade route between Fiore and Eria.
“Damn it.” he grunted, hitting the dashboard. “If I don’t end this quickly then we’re both gonna be fired on by the security bots.”
Separated by fifty miles, Sebastian was well outside the exclusion zone of the trade route, and with Epsilon's systems finally back online he ran another scan for the remaining Outcast ship. He spotted him several thousand kilometers in front of him once more, only this time he couldn't see him out the canopy window.
Sebastian squinted his eyes as he looked out the window, his grip firm on the stick as he came to realize that he had to. He thought of Alvia and Jeremy back on Fiore, both of them waiting for his safe return and comforting presence once more. Taking in a breath, he gradually began to speed towards the craft.
“Alright…we got one shot at this.” Sebastian said. “This doesn’t work, then Ophir Strait falls apart.”
Sebastian locked onto the Outcast ahead of him and fired one of the missiles beneath the spacecraft, but not before slightly altering its trajectory. Epsilon increased its speed enough causing the interior to shake and vibrate, the energy shields surrounding the outside were activated once again, as asteroids flew past the canopy glass at a high velocity. Within just a few minutes the Outcast ship came within sight. It fired its directed energy once again straight towards Epsilon which made contact with the energy shield. However Sebastian continued to fly straight towards the craft, ignoring the reducing shield's power. The Outcast panicked, as it appeared that Sebastian would crash Epsilon straight into his ship.
“Are you crazy?!” the pirate shouted.
Sebastian was unfazed. “Maybe.”
Before he knew it the Outcast was closer than ever, within a split second Sebastian's spacecraft zipped by the pirate in a swift clean motion. Epsilon then used its thrusters to reduce its velocity once more, the pirate beginning to laugh.
“What the hell was that? No guts to finish it huh?” His ship's energy weapon began to charge. “Looks like this is it then, butterfly.”
“Yeah. For you at least.”
Confused, the Outcast demanded to know what he meant. Sebastian for his part, chuckled as he directed the pirate to look behind him. The two missiles Epsilon fired earlier had reemerged and, with brute force, smashed into the pirates ship from both port and starboard side. A ball of fire engulfed the surrounding space followed by a brief blinding light. All of which could be seen, but not heard. The flames vanished. Filling the space with debris from the destroyed ship that floated off into various directions. Sebastian let out a breath of relief as Epsilon, damaged but still alive, gently raised its altitude to be above the Strain Belt. The sun’s light shone through the glass as he took off his helmet and accepted the light.’
“Epsilon, this is Fiore! Epsilon, do you read?” a voice spoke through comms.
“Fiore this is Epsilon, good to hear your voice.”
“Sebastian? Thank God. What’s happening up there? The signal cut out and we’ve been trying to reach you!”
Looking around the interior of the cabin he shrugged his shoulders, taking off his communications cap he responded.
“Well Fiore, I don’t know how to quite say this….”
Two months had passed since the incident in the Strain Belt, the Xanadu artifact had been secured by the company and taken to an orbital research station on one of Fiore’s moons.
The stadium had been packed to the rim with civilians from all across Eridani filling the twenty thousand seats that surrounded the massive holographic screen at the center of the ring. Fireworks lit the dim sky accompanied by confetti raining from passing overhead ships, and the cheers of all resonated throughout the air. Flags of the various inhabited worlds throughout Eridani flew along the center.
Among the thousands of civilians, Sebastian sat beside his wife with their son between them.
“Hey, look.” Alvia said, pointing upward. “They’re starting.”
Sebastian glanced towards the sky and his eyes were as wide as dinner plates, as five spacecraft conducting a flyover soared over the stadium in formation. Leaving behind trails blue and white smoke that casted the air in a striped pattern. They were Epsilon spacecraft, the very vehicle that saved his life within the Strain Belt. It was the second day of the 2273 Interstellar Aerospace Expo, hosted by the Astreans that lived on the planet Seira, the day that would kick off with a traditional anti-gravity race between the humans teams from Fiore, and the Jurahan teams from Eden.
“Dad, are we gonna win?” Jeremy asked.
Sebastian smiled and ruffled his hair. “I sure as hell hope so kid. That way Alex will be getting me lunch when we head back.”
Alvia covered Jeremy’s ears. “Sebastian, language. Not in front of Jeremy.”
“What? If I remember correctly you did the same before we left.”
Alvia playfully punched his arm before placing Jeremy on her lap.
Within moments of the racers being introduced the host of the show gave a brief speech to the people, welcoming all in attendance to both the race and the exposition. Upon finishing the anti-gravity timer began its countdown from ten, with the people all counting in unison as per tradition. The entire Sebastian couldn’t wipe the cheeky smirk off his face as he and his family cheered. Ecstatic that everything in the end worked out, from getting Epsilon approved in time for the exposition, to satisfying his son’s thirst for adventure. As the anti-gravity vehicles sped off into the fray he wrapped an arm around Alvia’s waist to pull her closer.
“You know you still owe me an explanation about what happened.” she said. “I want to know all about your first time back up in space.”
“Yeah. Well I’ll tell you…most of what happened.”
Sebastian pecked Alvia’s cheek, as the romanticized scale of the fireworks and race continued.

2023.03.25 22:57 Aeri73 16 - Manual focus
In the
previous lesson, we talked about how to let the camera decide where to put the plane of focus. However, there are many situations where you might want to take over that important task and do it yourself.
Blue The only practical way of focusing manually is via a ring on the lens. Sadly, manufacturers still haven’t agreed on which of the zoom or focus ring should be closer to the photographer, so there is no general rule, but those two rings should be found on any modern zoom lens. Most lenses and cameras require you to flip a physical switch to alternate between AF and MF. Some modern lenses also offer a very useful M/A mode: autofocus is used normally, but you can turn the manual focus ring at any point to override the camera and take control.
To achieve correct focus, you need a way of evaluating accurately how sharp your subject is. This means that you need to have a viewfinder large enough that small differences in focus will show. Sadly, most entry level DSLRs have tiny viewfinders, and this is one place where higher end bodies will make a clear difference. If you frame with liveview or an electronic viewfinder, you can often ask the camera to magnify the central area, thus allowing very precise focusing, the downside being the slowness of the whole process.
Even when you are in MF mode, the AF sensor will remain active and give you focus information. Just like the light meter tells you when it thinks you have achieved a good exposure in manual mode but lets you decide what to do with that information, the AF sensor will tell you when it thinks you have a well focused image, usually via means of a dot appearing in the viewfinder. Of course, you probably shouldn’t trust it entirely (if you do, save yourself the trouble and go back to autofocus), but it is still useful information to have.
Green It can make sense to use manual focus in the following situations:
- If your autofocus system is not up to par or if your subject is too complicated. This can happen for instance in cases where you have multiple objects at varying distances which could each equally well be your subject. The camera will try to guess which one you want to focus on, but it can’t read your mind. Focus and recompose in single AF mode can be useful here, but it is sometimes simpler to just switch to MF and take full control.
- More generally, as soon as you won’t want to focus on the obvious subject, switch to MF. For instance, you might be shooting a car race but want to focus on a detail of the road in front of the moving car. Chances are that your AF system will see this big thing moving fast into the frame and assume this is what you are interested in, losing the focus from the road.
- In street photography or other situations where your subject might be moving very fast and you only have a split second to get the shot, you can use MF to prefocus on the place where you expect the subject to appear. This is a favourite technique of Leica shooters in particular. To use it, you simply need to find an object at roughly the same distance than your expected subject, focus on it (wiuth either MF or AF), then go into MF mode and wait for the decisive moment.
- As we discussed in the last class, AF systems can’t work very well if there is not enough light. You probably won’t be able to manually focus precisely either, but you can use the distance scale found on all but the cheapest lenses, making an educated guess as to the distance to your subject. When the AF system “hunts” without any result (tries the whole range back and forth, then gives up), you should either switch to manual focus or abandon the image altogether.
- Finally, the last case is for careful tripod shots. With a good viewfinder or a magnified liveview, manual focus is much more precise than any autofocus system, so for those who want the absolute best out of their images, MF is a good option.

2023.03.25 22:18 A_Vespertine A Strange Planet
The two strange beings staring out at one another from across the temperate grassland were evolutionary cousins, both descendants of the long-extinct progenitor race of
Homo sapiens primaevus. Ironically, only the least human of the pair was aware of that.
His name was Telandros, though he normally neither spoke nor thought in a phonetic language. The only parts of him that were ‘biological’ was a brain more than thrice the size of an ordinary human’s and some auxiliary tissues, and these cells were comprised of synthetic XNA helixes that were vastly more complex and information-dense than DNA or RNA. Perpetually self-correcting and self-optimizing, both his psyche and flesh had persevered for thousands of millennia, and could easily survive for thousands more. The rest of his body was a polymorphic biomechanoid made of nigh-indestructible exotic matter, currently configured into the relatively traditional form of a four-limbed theropod.
His exterior was covered in a coat of iridescent, silvery filaments, each one fully prehensile and fractally branching off into smaller prehensile filaments, going all the way down to the molecular level. His large brain and other essential components were soundly secured within his ellipsoid torso, allowing his 'head' - which was actually just the end of his forwards facing tentacle - to be dedicated solely to an array of sensory apparatuses. His ‘face’ was composed of a rotatable, dilatable ring of six elliptical eyes, with multiple sets of air intake valves that were able to analyze the local atmosphere. His forelimbs, which moments ago he had used as wings to soar across the sky, were now a sprawling mangle of branching tentacles, whereas his hindlimbs were held together much more tightly to serve as legs. His tail, though currently only being used for counterbalance, could be repurposed into a third leg or extra arm in a jiffy if he needed it.
Mighty posthuman though he was, much like an ordinary human, Telandros couldn’t actually recall the early years of his life. Superfluous information was routinely condensed and pruned, and at some point over the aeons, his creation and nascent existence had been reduced to mere declarative memory as impersonal as anything else in his mental encyclopedia. While he had never been to Earth before, he knew that his ship, the
Forenaustica, had originated in Sol. His crewmates had been star-hopping from one solar system to the next, spending decades to centuries studying each one before moving on at near-light speed. Eventually, they had circumnavigated the entire galaxy and returned to Sol.
They were first greeted by the
Star Sirens, a very ancient race of microgravity-adapted transhumans that were said to date back nearly to the beginning of humanity’s expansion into outer space. Conservative even by immortal standards, they had changed little in all the time that the
Forenaustica had been gone. Like sharks and crocodilians, the Star Sirens viewed themselves as already perfect and beyond any need to evolve further.
While a race of early transhumans that was still counted among the genus
Homo may have seemed primitive to Telandros, they were still the most numerous race in Sol or any other star system with a permanent human presence, and all must yield to their authority as mistresses of the skies. Their success was a testament to the importance of initial conditions in the history of spacefaring civilizations. Had Telandros’s race come first, they would have easily outcompeted the Star Sirens before they could have gained a foothold in the cosmos. But the Star Sirens had capitalized on their first-mover advantage, and now the mermaids the ancient bioengineers had turned loose would rule the stars forevermore.
It had been the Star Sirens who had given Telandros – along with his ship and crew – their phonetic names. They were also incidentally the reason he was now called a ‘he’ at all. Telandros, of course, had no sex chromosomes, no reproductive organs, and no psychological or social gender. But to the Star Sirens, all men were foreigners, and at some point in their culture’s history, all foreigners had become men by default, so that’s what they put on his visa.
While the Star Sirens may have treated the crew of the
Forenaustica as coldly as they would any outsiders, they escorted them to Mars without a fuss, where they were treated to a much warmer welcome.
Telandros had been delighted to find that Mars was now a sprawling ecumenopolis. In the low gravity and thin atmosphere, pressurized skyscrapers made of imperishable materials that averaged over a thousand stories high had gradually accumulated to the point that they now blanketed the once-red planet and housed trillions of sapient beings. It was so vast, that the planet’s average temperature was kept above freezing simply by the city’s waste heat, hundreds of thousands of terawatts beamed to them from the Dyson swarm of solar collectors that had once been Mercury.
The Martians themselves were much like Telandros’ own people; a well-ordered Technate of demi-godly posthumans with a Saganian love of science and reason. They welcomed them home as prodigal sons, eager to learn of their long expedition and celebrate their courage and scientific spirit. Telandros happily spent his first few hundred days on Mars telepathically exchanging higher-dimensional semantic graphs with the hyper-intellectual elites, or soaring amongst the literal skyscrapers through the rarified atmosphere. He didn’t dare to dive too deep, however, for the fetid abyssal depths were long-neglected and were perilous for civilized beings to explore.
While Mars may now have been the heart of human civilization, the Earth would always be its cradle. Though Telandros fully intended to spend the bulk of his planned centuries in Sol on Mars, when the planet once again came into alignment with Earth, he decided to spend the next couple of years paying it a visit.
Earth was a strange planet, though in fairness it always had been. History that bordered on legend said that the first humans had once reached a population of around ten billion, but over centuries and millennia of low birthrates and high emigration to the exponentially growing numbers of idyllic centrifugal space habitats or Venusian cloud cities, the population eventually fell to under two billion and remained there. Most of Earth was a nature preserve, its climate and ecology now ironically kept in an unnatural stasis by its sapient population, who lived minimally disruptive lives either in self-sufficient city-states or rural homesteads.
The posthumans of Mars had not spoken highly of the locals, considering the (relatively) near-baseline transhumans who required an intact ecosystem to survive and prosper to be little different from the rest of the wildlife. To them, Earth was an undeveloped back-water, and kept so by a sense of posterity and sentimentality that their utilitarian minds found difficult to comprehend.
Telandros however had found the Earth folk eccentrically diverse in body and mind, a pleasant change from the insufferably homogenous and conformist Star Sirens he first met. Though they were simple by his standards, they at least didn’t think of him as a god or demon as some primitive aliens he had encountered on his travels had, and he generally found them accepting and helpful.
The vast nature preserves he visited were not completely unpeopled, but were home to indigenous tribes of techno-primitivist. One such tribe of genetically engineered Goliathans roamed the plains and woodlands, herding mammoths and terror birds, eschewing any technology other than what they could make with their own hands or the nanite symbiotes in their bodies. The men stood over eight feet tall and had strength enough to deadlift several tonnes, and feared not even the most ferocious of beasts. They were noble savages who used their superhuman intellects solely to philosophically justify their lives as noble savages, and Telandros had found them even more insufferably self-righteous than the Star Sirens.
But the being in front of him now was not one of the techno-primitivists. It was simply a primitive.
The creature was slight of build, though its torso was pear-shaped with strong gluteal muscles, and stood upon three-toed, digitigrade feet. It was only about half as tall as the Goliathan men, but seemed unlikely to be a pygmy relative. However, its dusty blue skin and silvery white hair were enough to mark it as a genetically modified being, even if that modification had occurred countless generations ago. It possessed pointed, articulated ears held high in attention, and its large, cat-like eyes glowed with a soft eyeshine in the evening light. It curiously sniffed the air with a large nose, which – when combined with its enlarged upper lip – gave it a noticeably rodent-like appearance. Most curiously of all, the thick, badger-like claws on its hands suggested that they were intended for digging, not tool use.
A quick analysis of the DNA particles floating in the air confirmed Telandros’ suspicion that the creature did in fact belong to the genus
Homo, but a scan of its anatomy revealed its brain to be around seven hundred cubic centimeters in size; twice the size of an average chimp’s, but barely half that of a baseline human. Was this a species of human that had been engineered for
lower intelligence, to the point of being sub-sapient? An utterly nihilistic and misanthropic concept, to be sure, but Telandros couldn’t deny that the results were at least scientifically interesting.
The creature let out a high-pitched yipping sound, and several others of his kin cautiously poked their heads out from over the tall grasses to examine the strange, shiny terror bird that was trespassing in their territory. One of the females had a miniature version of the creatures riding upon her back, one with a sloth-like body plan and disproportionately large head and ears, its long claws interlocking upon her clavicle. Telandros naturally assumed that it was an infant, and didn’t bother to examine it any closer.
Instead, he checked the up-to-date encyclopedia he had downloaded for any information it might have on the strange beings. He immediately found that they had been given the seemingly endearing name of Knollings and were descendants of some of the earliest eco-sapiens. These had been primitivists who had opted for genetic modifications to minimize their ecological footprints. Unlike the Goliathans, who had prioritized their own survival and well-being when redesigning their bodies for a stone age lifestyle, the eco-sapiens had wanted to have as little impact on the natural environment as possible. This meant not only making themselves smaller, but altruistic enough that they would willingly endure the sacrifices their lifestyle demanded of them for the benefit of an abstract concept of nature that could never consciously appreciate it. Their altruism eventually led to them becoming completely eusocial, and their utter dependence on their tribe – along with the demands for conformity – had actively selected against high intelligence. Electively cut off from civilization, they were at the mercy of natural selection, and over the aeons, their full sapience had been lost.
Tragic, but at least not atrocious, Telandros thought. He saw in his encyclopedia that they did still possess a simple language with a few hundred short words, which they would compound together when that vocabulary proved inadequate. The precise and information-dense phonetic languages of the other transhumans Telandros had met already seemed like oversimplified baby talk to him, but he supposed he could give this a shot as well. He carefully constructed the simplest semantic graph in his mind that still conveyed what he wanted, and vocalized it into the Knollings’ language.
“Hoot! Good-hoot! Very-good-hoot at sun-bye! Am far-man! Far-man go very-far in black-sky! Far-man go all around big star-family and see very many stars! Far-man come home after big-time! Far-man like new-things! You new-things to far-man! Trade stories with far-man? Hoot!”
The Knollings stared silently at him for a moment before exchanging confused glances with one another. They had never heard a terror bird talk before, he assumed, but they also lacked the intellectual capacity to be astonished by such a thing.
“What?” the first of them finally barked back.
Telandros hung his head in resignation. Productive communication between himself and the Knollings was likely not possible. As he wondered if one of the Goliathans might be able to serve as an interpreter between them, the baby babbled something that he didn’t bother to translate. His packmates, however, heeded the command and all turned their backs to Telandros in unison, dropping to all fours and scampering off through the tall grass.
Not wanting to let this unexpected opportunity pass him by, Telandros sprinted off after them in pursuit. He switched his focus to his infrared vision so as not to lose them in the grass, though they proved to be not much warmer than the surrounding environment. Keeping his distance and stooping well below the grass so as not to alarm them, he ran along the ground as silently as an owl in flight.
He watched as the Knollings all formed into a single file, then disappeared down a large tunnel into the earth. This was no doubt the warren that they had dug with their own claws, and according to his encyclopedia, there would be dozens to hundreds of Knollings spread throughout an extensive network of tunnels and chambers. Telandros retracted his limbs and elongated his torso to adopt a more weasel-like profile and slunk down the tunnel, eager to see the great Knoll Hole for himself.
He had been prepared to use his infrared and sonar sensors to view the warren, but to his surprise, he saw a glimmer of blue light twinkling just up ahead. Upon closer inspection, he saw that it was a log with large bioluminescent mushroom caps growing out of it, its placement suggesting that the Knollings were using it as a lamp. The regular placement of other such mushroom logs throughout the tunnel seemed to confirm this hypothesis, and soon Telandros came upon a chamber that was completely awash in the soft blue glow. Peeking his head inside, Telandros saw an immense and orderly stockpile of the logs, alongside storage niches filled with picked mushroom caps by themselves. He realized that the Knollings must have been farming the mushrooms for food and light, and most likely the shiny beetles he saw feeding on the rotting wood as well. This was likely a holdover from their eco-sapien days, and it made him wonder what other more complex behaviours these lowly creatures might still retain.
A pair of Knollings in the chamber spotted him immediately and began yipping, a warning cry that was echoed by a hundred other voices throughout the warren as they dashed off down another tunnel. Telandros could tell that they were heading towards some kind of large, central chamber, something he was determined to see with his own eyes before returning to the surface. Swiftly, he pulled himself along like some lizard chasing burrowing rodents, or at least that’s surely how he seemed to the Knollings. Soon the tunnel ended, dropping him into a vast subterranean cavern that had been dug out by claw generation by generation. A shaft of crepuscular light beamed down from the surface through a ventilation chimney, beneath which lay a hand-dug well that provided the Knollings with their water, and a hearth they kept for fire. Dozens of the Knollings had assembled in the central chamber, and all had gathered around a singular, venerated figure; their queen.
She wasn’t hard to spot, being not only larger than the others but taller as well – nearly as tall as a baseline human woman. It seemed that most of the Knollings were neotenic, never experiencing full puberty unless selected to breed. Only one female could breed at a time, and she dedicated herself fully to the responsibility. She was surrounded by a harem of several breeding males and wet nurses who cared for the offspring she produced.
The entire colony hissed and screeched at Telandros, trying to drive him off. One male, armed with a flint hand-axe virtually indistinguishable from one his
Homo habilis forebearers might have used, leapt towards Telandros and struck him with it. The stone shattered to pieces, leaving his hand bleeding and Telandros utterly unscathed. Two more males tried attacking him in this manner, and experienced identical results.
The cries of the Knollings became increasingly panicked at this development, while Telandros remained utterly unperturbed. His attention was instead on one of the wet nurses and the infant suckling at her teat, an infant that did not look like the small being he had seen earlier. Puzzled, he surveyed the central chamber in its entirety, eventually spotting three of the large-headed, large-eared little ones seated in a circle of mushrooms that sprouted directly from the ground rather than from a log. All three were looking at him with a keen gaze that seemed more acute than what a Knolling should be capable of, let alone an infant.
Checking his encyclopedia once again, Telandros was startled to find that these small members of the warren weren’t infants or even juveniles, but rather shamans of the Gaia Trees.
The Gaia Trees were plants that had been engineered to be biological server hubs, and communicated with each other and more traditional internet cables through genetically modified and nanotech-enhanced mycelial networks. The mycelium also allowed them to communicate with the roots of other plants, shepherding their behaviour and continuously managing and optimizing the world’s biosphere. While this network was technically just a subset of the multi-layered noosphere that enveloped the Earth, the techno-primitivists revered the Gaian Overmind as their goddess. The Goliathan shamans were confident in their ability to interpret omens from her, but as far as Telandros had been able to tell, it was all superstitious nonsense.
But this was different. The fairy ring that contained the Knolling shamans was unquestionably an outgrowth of the Gaian mycelial network. Their luminescence waxed and waned in a deliberate pattern, and when the shamans placed their palms upon the mushroom caps, Telandros could detect electrochemical signals being exchanged between them.
He realized then that he had been wrong about these simple people. They had not sacrificed sapience and civilization to an abstract and indifferent concept of nature, but rather to an ecotechnological embodiment of her, and it was a sacrifice that had not gone unappreciated. The Gaian Overmind had shepherded these people’s evolution, sparing the intellect of the shaman caste so that they would have someone able to interpret her will for them. Even if most of them had the minds of toddlers, rationality and intelligence were never what their ancestors had truly valued about being human. Living as harmoniously as possible with nature and one another was what the eco-sapiens of old had valued above all else, and that was what their descendants now had.
And there was nothing tragic about that at all, he realized.
“Good-hoot, far-man!” one of the shamans greeted him in a high-pitched voice, the rest of the warren falling silent at the sound of his revered voice. “Big-mans no come to Knoll-hole, but you strange-man. You no know good-ways. You dummy-dumb, but Gaia say you spoke true of flying through stars. Stars very high, but very small. Gaia big, far-man! Gaia protects Knollings! Leave Knoll-hole, and we forgive bad-ways! Stay, and Gaia curse you! All things Gaia touches will be far-man enemies! Choose now, far-man!”
Though it amused him that the Knollings thought of him as stupid, given his earlier botched attempt at oral communication, he decided that it was better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open his mouth and prove it.
Instead, he placed his left forelimb onto a nearby log and extended his microscopic manipulators into the dead wood to draw out the carbon. Holding his forelimb high for all to see, he rapidly began assembling the carbon molecules into a stylized diamond figure of their sacred mushrooms. He intentionally designed its lattice to make it phosphorescent, so that it would always glow with the same light as the real things. When the idol was complete, and still hot in his hand, he delicately placed it within the fairy ring for the shamans to examine.
While the other Knollings – even the queen – gawked on in fear and wonder, the shamans knew through their bond with the Gaian Overmind that such a thing was not only possible but common among the civilized peoples. Each shaman inspected the offering one by one and, in turn, nodded their approval.
His peace offering accepted and his curse averted, Telandros bowed graciously before shooting up the chimney overhead. Launching himself straight into the air, he resumed his aerial theropod form and continued soaring across the grasslands. He meant now to study the Gaian Overmind in more detail, eager to discover what other unexpected interactions it might have with the ecosystem and its people. Earth truly was a strange planet.
But in all fairness, it always
had been.

But in all fairness, it always
had been.

2023.03.25 22:05 dogwoodcuntseed Treating PMDD with Intermittent Sertraline: My Experience (so far)
TL;DR: Taking sertraline only during luteal phase alleviated 90% of my PMDD symptoms for two months in a row with only a few negative side effects, particularly sexual dysfunction. If you've been sitting on the fence about giving sertraline a try, do it. It's absolutely worth it. Introduction: Dealing with PMDD for over 15 years, I have tried several lifestyle changes to manage my symptoms, but none have been as effective as hiding during the luteal phase to avoid committing to plans and interactions with others. This approach was not always feasible, and I found that even my healthiest relationships were not immune to the destructive change in my perception brought on by PMDD. Frustrated, I decided to try Sertraline and found it to be an effective solution.
Background Information: - My periods come regularly and predictably every 28 days.
- My PMDD symptoms are luteal phase only, starting around 10 days before my period. Symptoms begin to subside about 24 hours before menstruation, and I feel a significant "bottoming out" where suddenly I'm calm and not grasping for relief.
- I have unconsciously self-medicated with alcohol and cannabis for most of my life. While alcohol and PMDD do not mix, weed is extremely palliative for the depression, anger, and suicidal ideation. However, I'd prefer not to be stoned all of luteal phase as weed comes with its own negative side effects.
- Birth control stabilizes me but leaves me in semi-depression all month. While not as low as the worst of PMDD, it is dulled and muted without the relief. There are more pills I can try, but I do not see anything with Progestin working out well for me.
- I take 10-20 mg of Adderall almost daily for ADHD. Otherwise, I do not take any other medications.
How it went: Sertraline worked wonders for me, right from the start. Initially, I started with a 50mg dose, but it caused severe nausea and headaches. After reducing the dose to 25mg for a couple of days, I no longer experienced any adverse effects, only the benefits of the medication. At first, I felt a little strange (like the "cardboard" feeling that some people describe), but that went away, and I began to feel normal. Although not quite as energetic and inspired as during the follicular phase, I was free from the oppressive dark mood of PMDD. When the PMDD symptoms started to break through, I increased my dose to 50mg and continued taking it until the end of my luteal phase.
It was incredible to sail through "Hell Week" as though it were any other week of the month. The change was so remarkable that I reproached myself for not trying it earlier. Firstly,
I had no suicidal thoughts. Those usually surface around Day 20, and was one of the symptoms that led to my diagnosis because because there was this reoccurring sense of "Hey! Where'd this sudden darkness come from!?"
Secondly,
I was free from any self-image issues. Not once did I look in the mirror with horror and declare I'm the Ugliest Person in the World. Frankly, it speaks to the gross distortion PMDD wreaks upon our perception. Without fail PMDD always convinces me that I should just wear a paper bag over my head and settle for a life lived in baggy sweatpants, because there's no rescue for someone as hideous as me. My jaw dropped when I realized I'd skipped through luteal unencumbered by the insidious self-loathing that doesn't just ridicule my appearance, but my whole personhood. That shit takes so much energy and has held me back so much in life. I already don't have the best self-esteem, but PMDD takes that to an extreme that paralysizes me. It's hard to make progress in life and achieve your dreams when you truly, unequivocally believe you're the Worst Person Ever for almost two weeks out of every month.
I had virtually no interpersonal conflicts. My conflicts with others during PMDD is my worst symptom, and like I said, no relationship is immune to it. It's like PMDD turns me into misanthropic, selfish, high-drama bitch who only sees other's shortcomings, who can only misconstrue other people's actions as unfair, personal attacks against her. The fact that this symptom was kept in check is the most life-changing one of them all. Like, this is how I don't get into unnecessary fights with love ones, how I stop losing friends, how I quit getting fired. No amount of self-awareness has been able to manage this aspect; the only mitigation strategy that has worked is avoiding everybody during luteal, which is not possible. The sertraline seemed to blunt my ability to cry from joy, otherwise I would've when my boyfriend told me how happy it made him to see me smiling and making jokes. The difference was most obvious with him, and it's a relationship-saving difference. FWIW I added the qualifier "virtually" because during the second month's trial there was a small hiccup between my boyfriend and I, but it was wholly manageable. I was able to self-soothe my triggered anxious attachment, stay calm, and reach resolution quickly. In a situation where my PMDD would normally build a tidal wave, there was only a slight ripple.
Sadly, the sexual dysfunction is real. I could still get aroused, but it was muted, and climaxing is next to impossible. If I do manage to rub out an orgasm, it's underwhelming. But within 48 hours of going off sertraline everything returns to normal. Since for now I'm experimenting with luteal-only dosing, I'm fine with this negative side effect because I still get to enjoy my sexuality the other half of the month. If this was a monthlong side effect I don't know what I would do. Making love is deeply fulfilling to me, and it'd be a steep price to pay month-long for luteal-phase stability.
Oddly, after this second round of sertraline I'm feeling abnormally weepy and sad despite that I'm bleeding. I didn't have that after going off sertraline the first time, so I don't know if the two are related. I'm going through some stressful life changes at the moment which are likely the cause, but it's hard to tell. Usually when bad moods are unshakeable I know it's something more chemically-driven, but it's really a toss up as to why I'm on my period right now but feeling blue. I'm filing that under TBD.
I plan to experiment for a third month with sertraline, following this dosing pattern:
- 25mg for Day 14 of my cycle
- 50mg for Days 18-26
- 25mg for Days 27-28.
Depending on this next month's results, my next moves are to try luteal-only fluoextine (particularly to see if I can avoid the sexual dysfunction), and then to try continuous, monthlong sertraline. I'd like to dispose of my ovaries and uterus and live a stable life on HRT, but I owe it to myself to try less drastic measures first. Overall the two months of trialing intermittent sertraline has been a game changer for me and my PMDD, and I recommend anyone considering it to give it a go.

2023.03.25 21:56 SamBegleyAuthor A Quiet Pint At The Smirking Stoat (Part III)
Read parts 1 & 2 here Part III The groan had shifted, becoming a raspy croak that still seemed to originate from nowhere in particular. Upon hearing the voice, all but two of the patrons bowed their heads, looking down into their glasses as if hoping to find an escape route in the golden-brown liquid that bubbled in them.
The two who did not look away – Llewyn and Rhodri – were the largest of the pub’s dozen or so regulars. Giants of men, they both stood well over six feet tall, with long, wild hair and unkempt beards that dripped with what was likely decades of spilt drinks. Solemnly, the two marched over to Darren’s hunched frame, grabbing him by the arms and hauling him, wriggling and retching towards the cellar door. Charlie followed, gesturing to one of the women who sat sipping a sherry in the corner to clean the pool Darren had left behind.
The black maw of the cellar opened below Darren. At first he could see nothing but subterranean blackness as he gazed down into the abyssal basement, but as his eyes began to adjust to the darkness, the scale of The Smirking Stoat became clearer. The staircase that lay before him was hewn out of the living rock of London Town, descending deep below the pub. Through centuries of use the stairs had warped to fit the feet of the men who had carried countless barrels down into the depths. Dark liquid had pooled in each of the indents, overrunning and flowing down to the basement floor below. Darren convinced himself that the black liquid was just spilled beer, or rusty water that had dripped down from the iron bannisters. But the moment he was dropped into the pit by the titans who carried him, that notion was destroyed when, to break his fall, he plunged his hand into a slick and syrupy pool of coagulated blood. Pulling his hand away from the broken surface of the gelatinous liquid, the air filled with a putrid metallic stench that he’d never experienced before. Thrown off balance by the rank odour and looking at his palm with horror, his body, slick with blood, slid down the stairs before he landed in a crumpled heap on the floor.
For a while he simply sat, feelings of fear, shock and disgust crashing over his psyche in wild waves. There was an uncanny silence down there in the dark. But as his eyesight adjusted to the darkness he began to make out the room into which he had been thrown. Beneath the ancient pub lay a cavernous ossuary, carved into London’s bedrock, the cellar spread out in every direction, stretching so deeply into the darkness that it was eventually engulfed by abyssal nothingness. Though stalactites now descended from the ceiling of the cavern, this was no natural formation with clear signs of ancient masonry dotted about the walls. Beautiful Romanesque artwork was chiselled into some areas of the wall, while others were covered with the desperate maddened scrawls of those who had been in Darren’s position before. Fragments of the brown bones of victims past – all apparently human– were scattered across the flagstones. Bashed and splintered, this was not the necrotic detritus of a peaceful passing, but reflective of the violent end met by those to whom these skeletons once belonged.
Darren knew that any attempt to escape through the trapdoor atop the stairs would be futile. Checking his iPhone, he noted the total absence of any signal, before turning on the torch.
His usual braggadocio, though certainly muted, manifested itself in a decision to proceed directly into the darkness ahead. Ancient flecks of dust floated through his vision in a state of warped serenity as the beam of light emanating from Darren’s phone cut through the oppressive dark of the tavern’s oubliette. Even with the torch, the room seemed to go on for miles. Columns whittled from the rock cast long shadows in each direction, reaching out across the floor like eternal black tendrils. Darren moved with precise determination towards a destination he did not know, following the gentle decline of the cellar deeper into the earth beneath the city. In no time, he’d built a steady pace across the uneven ground strewn with ancient bones and patches of dried blood.
Engulfed in total darkness, he had walked for what felt like five minutes, though he couldn’t be certain, when he began to hear a sound distinct from the crunching of ancient bones under his white trainers. Somewhere out there in the distance was the sound of water lapping at the shore, a tidal ebb that ignited a spark of hope inside him. The size of the cellar was unbelievable, but perhaps he had finally found a way out.
As he got closer to the source of the noise, the tidal rippling now echoing around the stone walls, Darren’s nose began to twitch. The musty, lightly metallic smell of the cellar began to give way to that of a dirty river. The same smell which rose up from stagnant inlets at Canada Water, the smell experienced daily by the mudlarkers who trudged up and down the thin beaches of the river’s north bank, this was the smell of the Thames – the ancient river that would take him home.
Despite the circumstances, a wide grin broke out across Darren’s face, and he barely tried to hold in the childlike giggle of excitement that he gave as he got closer and closer to the exit. He began to see patches of dappled sunlight reflecting off some distant pools in thin strands against the now very intricately carved walls. He no longer cared what happened to the wretched pub; “Pull it down or leave it standing, whatever they do I ain’t ever going back.” he thought to himself.
Finally, he reached the waters edge. The sun’s fingerlike rays wormed their way through cracks in the ceiling, shining down onto the black water before him. Along with the sun, the faint, distant sound of a construction site had also made its way through the gaps in the rock and into the chamber. Darren stopped. There was no obvious way out, no cave entrance leading out onto the river, but the tidal motion indicated that this pool must connect to the Thames somehow. Without thinking, he cried out for help, pleading that one of the millions of Londoners above would hear his cries until his voice turned hoarse. But the sounds of jackhammers, bulldozers and cranes deafened his calls.
Eventually it dawned on him that there was no help coming, no real way to call for help. Something primal from deep within knew that there was no help here beneath The Smirking Stoat. It was either die there on the floor of the cellar from starvation, or take his chances that he could somehow swim out into the main watercourse of the River Thames through whatever system of cave-tunnels connected this pool to the outside world. He unbuttoned his shirt, preparing to strip down to his underwear and dive in.
The moment he threw his shirt to the ground and kicked off his shoes, the water began to bubble. Like a boiling saucepan, a rolling funnel of thick black bubbles emanated from deep below the centre of the small pool, rising to the surface in a barrage of bulbous popping liquid. But there was no steam, and dipping his toes lightly into the water, Darren noticed that, despite the violent motion of the unholy spring, it was still cold.
Puzzled, he stepped backwards, his brain struggling to determine whether it was still worth diving in. Though he wanted nothing more than to get out of the place, every fibre of his being screamed at him that he should absolutely not venture into that water. As he stood there, slack-jawed in his confusion, the bubbling of the water became more and more rapid, until the entire pool was a thrashing mass of black hydric balls.
At this point, Darren heard a voice rattling in his skull. It seemed to be coming from the water, but that would be impossible, surely. Hoarse and cutting, the voice spoke directly into his mind.
“You have come here, to my sacred well.” The voice echoed from somewhere beyond the depths, as though tearing holes through the heavens as it shot into Darren’s head, bringing him to his knees as his hands clawed frantically at his skull in a futile attempt at silencing the maddening speech. “Like those who now guard me, you seek to destroy that which is sanctified. Since the arrival of the men who carried crosses, I have been threatened, but you shall not win.”
Darren did not reply, he could not speak, his head burned hot, his eyes turning to coals as his vision was consumed by the bubbling blackness into which he stared.
“I know what you are thinking,” the voice rasped, “you do not believe yourself a destroyer, a defiler, those like you never do. But I am the river, I know all, I know your intentions, the callous thoughts that dance deep within, even if you do not.”
Darren’s black eyes merely gazed vacantly into the Stygian water, mouth agape as the river continued to tear at his psyche and echo in his mind.
“Many have come here and communed with me, once with respect, but no longer. In days past I was offered the bodies of men, but that has not happened for many years. Now, I am forgotten, even the guardians above have not trodden this floor in decades, though they fear and revere me in equal measure. For they – the ones with whom you spoke – are the only ones who truly understand my power.
They are the only ones who know that it does not matter how many tonnes of concrete and glass are piled above. That it does not matter how much filth and grime is poured into my waterways. I cannot be killed, I cannot be vanquished, I am that which has been and always will be. My spirit lives in this water, it lives beneath the roads and towers, and it will never allow itself to be destroyed.”
The entity seemed to release its grip on Darren somewhat. Though when he tried to speak, he could only manage a wretched scream. His wails echoed around the cavern as he tore his eyes from the still bubbling pool before him. As the voice continued to speak into his mind, Darren curled into a ball on the floor, quivering and crying in a pitiful heap.
“A sacred grove once stood above us, where those who revered me would make offerings and, in turn, I was good to them. Their fields were fertile, their water clean and their animals healthy. But,” the voice of the thing in the river swelled with burning hate, “before long, it was cut down by the cross-bearers. In secret, my followers crafted this temple, vowing to keep alive my spirit, allowing me to grow in power.”
As the voice carried on speaking, Darren faded into dream. In his mind, he saw men in white robes with long beards, their faces daubed with blue makeup, carrying flaming torches and carving out the rocky passage through which he had walked. Other men, clean shaven and wearing different robes, laid mosaic tiles into the pillars that had been carved out of the rock. As though leaping through time, violent images of bloody sacrifices flickered across his vision, some showed the white bearded men from before standing in a circle burning a small wooden idol that encased a seemingly willing victim. Others showed hefty blonde figures, wailing as their arms were stretched over wooden planks and their lungs torn from out of their back and draped over their shoulders, throbbing and dripping red mucus as their victims drowned in fresh air.
The dreams continued, from above the surface this time. A verdant meadow lay before him, with a rudimentary building site at its centre. Men in dirty tunics and sackcloth trousers, hoisted the wooden framed facade of a building upright, driving thick iron nails into the existing stone structure. It looked like a typical country pub, and carved into the wooden beam in a rudimentary mediaeval hand that ran the width of the facade were the words ‘ye smirking stoate’. Upon reading the name, Darren once again plunged beneath, with more macabre images weaselling into his mind, showing a group of men – one of whom was quite clearly the landlord wielding a large dagger – wearing old fashioned suits and bowler hats, looking solemn as they carved strange symbols into the writhing flesh of a young woman who had been laid across a wooden table.
As he thrashed and moaned in his dreamstate, Darren’s once slick black hair turned into a mass of thin white strands. The disturbing grotesque images that played out behind his flickering eyes were one thing, but knowing that the city he called home was built upon such evil seemed to crush his soul itself.
“Stop!” his voice was strained and harsh “Please!” Darren managed to force the cries out from the wall of unconsciousness that he had been thrust behind. The voice relented, and the property man faded back to reality before vomiting on the floor.
“My temple shall not be levelled.” the river spirit roared the words from somewhere deep in the black beyond “My well shall not be destroyed. My spirit has survived armies, fires and bombs. It will not be conquered, your wrathful march that seeks to destroy all that is old and sacred to make way for commerce and consumption will crumble in time, as all threats to the spirit do. Now go, servant of London, join your fellow guardians.”
Darren pushed himself up from the floor, his legs shaking under the weight of his frail body. Wiping tears from his glassy eyes and flecks of dark vomit from his white stubble, he made his way back up the dark tunnel, leaving the well and its resident behind him.
Though he no longer had a light source, his legs carried him on his journey through the darkness until he arrived at the stairs down which he’d been thrown hours earlier. His eyes downcast, he trembled with each climb of the stairs until he reached the trap door. It was open, with the warm glow of the fireplace above welcoming him to join his fellow guardians of the well. As he clambered back into the main room of The Stoat, he observed the patrons once more. With each eye he caught, a wry smile and slight nod was returned to him. His hollow eyes and thin hair now ensured that he fit in perfectly with the usual crowd.
“So, what’ll it be, mate?”

2023.03.25 21:07 AnyDefinition5391 simple blue dot question windows 11 and google search was useless
I have a little blue dot on the right click option "run as administrator". Windows 11. Does this simply mean it is set to run as administrator already? It should be for me, but I'm curious. I don't completely trust windows 11 - some settings seem to mysteriously change themselves.

2023.03.25 20:47 Wapulatus Featuring The Gatewatch! (Magic: The Gathering)
"For justice and peace..."
"For the sake of the Multiverse..."
"If it means that people can live in freedom, yeah..."
"For the life of every plane..."
"Happy now?"
Featuring... The Gatewatch!
The Multiverse encapsulating the story of Magic: The Gathering hosts a vast, sprawling storyline that shifts from plane to plane, exploring worlds entirely alien to one another yet part of the same overarching narrative.
Among these worlds are powerful mages with the ability to move between these planes, known as Planeswalkers. Planeswalkers are typically aloof, selfish, and cowardly due to being able to simply move to an entirely new world whenever danger or conflict presents itself.
However, when the Eldrazi threatened to consume the entire plane of Zendikar, four planeswalkers made the decision to stay and fight instead of leaving the plane to its fate, resolving to kill the eldrich abominations. This group would become known as The Gatewatch, and would be at the center of Magic: The Gathering's story for nearly half a decade as a central cast of characters.
NOTE: This thread only covers the original five members of the Gatewatch, and their most basic abilities for the sake of brevity. Individual planeswalker bios are sourced from Wizards' official planeswalker profiles.
General Abilities
Before we hit the team members, every Gatewatch individual are both planeswalkers and mages, sharing general characteristics in how they use magic and traverse planes.
Planeswalking
"In Magic: The Gathering, a Planeswalker is a powerful mage who is able to travel across the planes of existence. There are infinite worlds across the Multiverse, and Planeswalkers are unique in their ability to move from one world to the next, expanding their knowledge and power through the experiences they collect there."
You are a Planeswalker
Mana Sensing/Gathering
A powerful warrior-mage with the ability to make himself invulnerable, Gideon is fiercely loyal, unyielding, just, charismatic and never hesitates to enter combat to defend the innocent.
Physical Feats
Gideon [uses his magic to enhance his strength]() further beyond what he's normally capable of.
Hm? What about durability? Well...
Primary Magic - Indestructibility
Gideon's whole gig is being durable. His magic allows him to form a flexible, skintight barrier around his body to protect himself as he fights.
Regular Durability
Esoteric Durability
Special Abilities
Other Spells and Equipment
Jace Beleren may be the most talented mind mage in the Multiverse. Able to read thoughts, erase memories, induce sleep, and immerse others within illusions, he is a strategic genius of exceptional intelligence and insatiable curiosity.
Physical Feats
Primary Magic - Telepathy
With his most infamous card having the epithet "The Mind Sculpter", it's no surprise that Jace can mess with the minds of other people like you or I have some fun with a ball of play-dough.
Mind Control
Mind Reading
Other Spells
Liliana Vess is a master necromancer who commands the dead and manipulates the living to achieve her own ends. Ambitious, cunning, and supremely confident, she plays a dangerous game of shifting loyalties, aligning herself with whoever offers the surest path to fulfilling her desires.
Physical Feats
Primary Magic - Necromancy
Undead Control
Death Magic
Other Spells and Equipment
Free-spirited, impulsive, and incredibly powerful, Chandra Nalaar is still growing into the hero she is destined to become. The art of conjuring fire comes to her naturally and, when faced with a challenge, she tends to act first and think later. Chandra believes that everyone deserves the freedom to make their own choices.
Physical Feats
Like Gideon, Chandra uses magic to enhance some of her physical abilities.
Primary Magic - Pyromancy
Chandra is a red mage's red mage. Her magic is straightforward and simple, burn things and burn them good.
Force
Heat
Nissa Revane is a powerful elven animist capable of awakening the land itself to fight at her side. Her innate connection to the primal magic of the Multiverse gives her profound respect for all life and the systems that support it. Despite her kind and soft-spoken demeanor, she fights both fiercely and relentlessly to defend the natural world wherever it is threatened.
Physical Feats
Primary Magic - Elemental Control
Nissa's main form of sorcery is through her agility to speak to the land itself and summon elementals composed of it to fight in her stead. She can summons giant-sized elementals in the span of a few heartbeats.
Noteworthy Elementals
Normal Elementals
Other Spells and Equipment
Using the Gatewatch on WhoWouldWin
The Gatewatch are basically fantasy's equivalent of the Avengers. They're a diverse group of superpowered individuals with varying capabilities per team members that work together to become more than the sum of their parts.
There's two ways to go with this - have them fight other superpowered hero/villain groups from either fantasy or something more in-tune with traditional comic books, or have them fight a giant, powerful enemy that they can team up to defeat (similar to the Eldrazi, Nicol Bolas, etc).
Of course, these kinds of matchups can be very messy and hard to parse. It's always better to consider if 1v1 matchups are easier to talk about and are more interesting before jumping into giant team battles!

2023.03.25 20:37 Pupperoo_12_09 Puppy Blues and Puppy Love
| I got my cockapoo pupper Remy 3 weeks ago at 11 weeks, and he is now 15 weeks old. Before I brought him home, I read a LOT of posts on here and am eternally grateful for all of you here who share their puppy stressors and joys. It helped me become more realistic about what day-to-day life with my baby boy would be like. *** Here is my experience with puppy blues so far: The first day or three was more of a very high euphoria ride with a few moments of: "What have I done....I got a DOG....Oh my God....This is the best and I will love him forever.....Oh God, what have I done....I am not ready for this....Thank God I have him...I can't do this....Oh it certainly won't be THAT hard, will it?....Oh man, this is too much already....I am so happy!!....This is terrifying, what have I done......rinse and repeat." *** The first week was filled with a few tears as the honeymoon behavior and high wore off, the new reality of lack of sleep settled in, and more practical issues came up (e.g. all vets are booked out in advance due to pandemic dog adoption tsunamis for two weeks, and how am I to socialize and avoid parvo all at the same time and I can't clip his nails because I fear I will make him bleed, so when will that get done....ahhhhhhh). ---- I did cry and feel totally in over my head on about 3-4 occasions.... ---- Week 2 same thing...... *** Week 3 got a LOT (!) better already. It suddenly felt like more and more moments of feeling normal and me-like came back. I actually showered more (not joking, first three days were utter disheveled madness for me....) and flossed my teeth again, went to therapy, the gym, etc. *** When I analyze those 3 weeks my puppy blues low moments were almost always caused by sleep deprivation for me and/or the pup....Meaning, if you have family or friends who can take on a night potty shift so you can sleep in another room with earplugs do that...It will save your sanity and love for the wee thing that now depends on you 24/7. If you let the dog nap when they are tired it helps a lot as well...I tried pushing things like "Ok, I played with you, fed you, we went potty 214423535 times, now I can clean the kitchen." Well, my pup is done with the world at about 7:30pm-8:00pm, and if I don't take him and go sleep then, forget it. He amps up, I get nothing done, the next day he is cranky and tired and uber-sharky.... *** Now that my first vet appointment is behind me, and he is on time for his third vaccine series in 2.5 weeks when we head back there (he loves the vet!) it will continue to feel lighter. *** It really took 3 weeks for us to find our groove together. I think one of my biggest adaptations was to realize life will not be the same again. Not forever, because sleep and quiet lazy days will come back and the extra running around has actually helped me feel more active (and it helped me depression/anxiety). I was worried about my mental health for a while, but again as soon as I got help from even just a colleague coming over for two hours to help .... I felt better. Now I go to bed extra early and the pup is ok with 4 hour intervals at 15 weeks to go out to potty. So I get 12 hours but divided in 3 shifts. (I work full-time and don't have human kids) *** Now that I figured out what my pup likes, I got a lot of that (Amazon, Petco, etc.)....a large snuffle mat, a fun toy to chase on a stick so my back gets a break, lol, healthy safe chew toys and treats, and all meals are fed in a non-traditional situation (e.g. snuffle mat, Kong, licking mat, food puzzles, a combination of all things at once). That buys me time for a quiet morning coffee (which can save my day from spiraling out of control....) *** It still is hard and I am sure I will cry again (and again). But one schlick kiss and him cuddling up against me at night (we cosleep) and man....so much love filling my heart....and I am right there all high again on puppy love. He even seeks out his kennel (I call it 'The Relax House') and dog bed which are next to my bed (currently just my matress on the floor as I am terrified of him jumping/falling off the bed and breaking a leg....). *** Half the night is now spent in my bed and half elsewhere, which was his pace and I let him choose every night..... Cosleeping was the best solution for my pup as he was raised in a large family and kept in their family house, so he had never not touched someone else while sleeping....I respect that and want him to have that at my home. (Plus, I love his wee chest sighing on my chest when we lay down....knowing my heartbeat and warmth are soothing to him and make him feel safe....waaaaaaa). *** Since we cannot have paws on the ground or other dogs until the vet clears him, I started inviting everyone and everything I can, even people I don't like as much, lol, so pup has entertainment and socialization. I take him on walks holding him or placing him in a Reddy carry backpack (working on him liking the latter....). I also hired a dog trainer who does home visits. It's a bit more pricey than Petco/Petsmart, but our area has a serious leptospirosis breakout according to my vet, and he will not be eligible for that vaccine until in 2.5 weeks...so I am not risking it. *** At the end of the day...if you feed and water your pup....make sure he naps and sleeps....has enough exercise and entertainment for both his body and mind....give yourself a (LOT!) of grace and patience...and him as well (you're both doing the best you can....you really are!!!) it can be done. Don't give up hope unless you're in a crisis and in that case, give yourself permission to consider a safe rehoming solution. Ask for help. Don't feel ashamed about how you feel. It's human and normal. *** I read so much and had neighborhood friends with dogs growing up...and still was in for a massive life change shock. I love him so much. And it is so hard at times. Now he seems to mellow out a bit, which I attribute to me also knowing better what his rhythm and needs are. (3-3-3 rule seems spot on so far....) *** In between the vet, Reddit, friends who have dogs...we will manage. There will be good moments and bad ones, blah ones, gritty ones, elated and high ones....and all things in between. He is a family member now. *** My therapist reminded me to give myself permission to try it out. If it doesn't work, you can and will find a solution. It turns out this worked out for me and I am in for his life. He is mine and I got him covered even in case of me passing (he has the AKC protection with a card in my wallet should I die in a car crash, etc. and two friends with dogs agreed to look after him in that case so he will never end up at a sheltepound). *** By God does he make me happy. I am so glad I knew puppy blues is a thing and didn't blame myself for having it. I hope I can do justice by him and give him the best life possible. *** As I am typing this, my Remy is sleeping by my feet on the floor (he has 5 dog beds and donut beds and all the things, lollll) and I feel so content. Coffee next to me, Netflix on. Yeah, I may only get 20 minutes before he wakes up and his needs routine continues, but this is.....amazing. It's so much better than my empty weekends before I had him. *** These first 3 weeks would have been impossibly hard without the Reddit puppy community resources...My vet and dog trainer complimented me on knowing so much, 99% of which came from members on here sharing their knowledge. THANK YOU. *** Puppy Tax: https://preview.redd.it/ydww9aakuxpa1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73ec4935fba627f6f78bcd68813ccae45c2d3bf5 submitted by Pupperoo_12_09 to Puppyblues [link] [comments] |

2023.03.25 19:04 adamlatif4 Daily Song Discussion #43: Czech One
The forty-third entry in this series introduces
Czech One, the eleventh track from King Krule’s third studio album,
The OOZ [2017].
Czech One How would you rate this song on a scale of 1-10? In words, how do you feel about this song? What are some of your favourite lyrics in this song?
SUGGESTED SCALE TO RATE EACH SONG: (Decimal ratings are fine too) 1-4: Not good, regular skip
5: It’s okay, but I have to be in a certain mood to listen to it
6: Better than average, I won’t skip it but I wouldn’t choose to play it
7: This is a good song that I fairly enjoy
8-9: Fantastic song, I rank it highly overall
10: Masterpiece, perfection
After 24 hours, every number rating commented in the replies will be averaged and set as the subreddit’s rating of the track. Results will be posted in the next daily song discussion, except for the final track post being edited to prevent results from bleeding over into the next album.
After every track in an album is rated, they will be aggregated to give the album its own rating overall.
