2023.03.25 23:33 Naivemlyn A thing I don’t understand about MAs
This may seem silly, but I’ve thought about this for a while. Sometimes I hear academics (I work in academia, staff) talk about how somebody’s master thesis is interesting. My own lecturers have told me they’re excited about the one I’m currently writing, as the topic is quite novel. But I wonder - why? Nobody reads these things. They are hardly worth anything. They can barely be used as a reference even. It’s not like I will ever do a PhD (unless I plan on working until I’m 200 years old). Anything mediocre or better is published at the university library, so as a student, unless you know the author, I’ve no idea whether the theses that I find in my field are even any good. (Who am I to judge.)
I am just trying to wrap my head around what the external value of these MAs even are? I get the point about showing your skills as a student/candidate, but for anyone else?
Edit typo

2023.03.25 23:19 Iejends MMath Thesis vs Research Paper
Hi all, I was recently admitted to the MMath Biostatistics program here for next fall. Looking on the department’s website, it seems that Biostats only has a research paper option and not a thesis like Stats or ActSci.
I’m hoping to pursue a PhD after I finish my master’s program. My understanding is that a research paper is not as intensive as a thesis - would this put me at a disadvantage when applying for PhD programs in the future, or am I completely off base about the work that is expected for a research paper?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

2023.03.25 20:10 eminem0609 TA/RA opportunities + co-op for MS ECE students
Hi everyone, I have received an admit from UCSD for MS ECE for Fall 2023. I had some questions regarding TA/RA opportunities:
- How difficult is it for MS ECE students to get TAships/RAships in the same/different department?
- Is there any tuition fee waiver for TA/RAships?
- Are international students allowed to do co-op interns? I read that a Summer+Fall-Quarter pilot program is being introduced and that the co-op intern will even count towards degree credits (ECE 298). Could someone please confirm/give more info on this?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

2023.03.25 18:11 Cool_Strategy_6271 Most stereotypical student week 3 updates: how can one get so many waitlists 😭😭
I know I said I wasn't gonna do a week 3 update but doing one anyways lol.
tldr of my app - asian male cs bay area
- 36, 3.97 UW, 5’s on 7 AP’s
- 3 x AIME, 3 x PVSA Gold, AP CS A perfect score (1 of 300), National Merit Finalist
- forbes-featured nonprofit ceo, director of tech for civic ngo with 5 mil+ views on website i built, built robots for a company to automate functions, funded and coached 80 kids from under-resourced community where i grew up to participate in robotics, robotics team captain, cs club pres, math club pres, 2 cs internships, youth council of gun violence prevention ngo (mil+ teenagers reached)
- good essays too, especially for RD
Here is my full info with much more detail on activities and my own thoughts on my application:

- UMich CS
- Georgia Tech CS: Woohoo huge W lmaoo, probably not taking it over UMich but definitely one of my top choices right now
- UIUC CS+Econ
- UCSB CS + Engineering Honor: at least this puts my heart at rest. I was lowkey really worried there was some big red flag in my app after ucsd reject.
- Purdue DS
- Boston University CS (2024 transfer program): only applied here because they give merit aid. did not get any merit aid. did not even really get in lol.
- UCSC CS
Waitlists: - Northwestern: aw man another t10 waitlist. I was kinda hoping for this one because one of my distant cousin goes there right now so at least I'd know someone there (unlike at Michigan)
- UCLA: dropped a fire LOCI and am starting as a research assistant for one of their PHD students so hopefully that can push me over the edge
- CMU: sad about this one too because I really mess with their Information Systems program. Gonna accept priority wiatlist if I don't get into anywhere better by April 7th
- Johns Hopkins: dropped a fire LOCI here too
- Harvey Mudd: fire LOCI #3
- Claremont McKenna: My application was literally incomplete for these guys. they must have been very desperate.
- UC Davis: still don't know why this one happened, did not accept a place on the waitlist
Rejections: - MIT
- Caltech
- UChicago
- UCSD
- USC: Oh well. Would have liked to study in SoCal and the 50% off for nmf was nice, but UMich has significantly better CS and business programs so not too deeply disheartened
Awaiting: - Brown, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, Princeton (ECE), Rice, Stanford (Symbolic Systems), UPenn (EE), Yale (EECS), Georgetown, Columbia, UC Berkeley (EECS)
Additional Information: There are increasingly fewer schools left awaiting lol! Getting a bit shaky now.
Two main takeaways from this week
- Waitlists SUCK. all of these schools (except cmu) waitlist as many/less than they accept. It jurts to have been that close but missed out on the acceptance. I still have hope a slimmer of hope that I can get off of UCLA or Northwestern because I think my updates are actually quite good, and the whole UCLA research thing, but let's see. Also I think if I get any more waitlists I might be in contention for some sort of record
- UC system. i got admitted into all 3 of the big OOS public CS programs, all of which are better (imo) than the UCLA and UCSD CS programs. I really would have liked one of those two tbh, because UC system is so much more affordable. Unless Berkeley or Stanford clutch up, I'm going OOS, which I'm not opposed to (if Michigan was the same price as Cal and LA I would choose Michigan any day) but it would have been nice to get into at least one of the big 3 UCs

2023.03.25 16:47 JammingScientist How to get scholarships to pay for classes if you are switching fields
Does anyone have any advice for finding scholarships to help pay for people who already have a bachelor's degree and want to get background in another field? I started college early (16) and just chose the safe route of biology so that I could go on to medical school that would make my parents proud. Fast forward to now, I realized I do not want to do medicine at all, and that I vastly prefer computer science and electronics. Therefore, I want to take electrical engineering and computer science classes, but many are not free. Some CS are, but not ECE.
I'm currently doing a masters in biomedical engineering, and plan to start my PhD in the fall, however I do not have the background needed to do the type of research I'm interested in (medical device development), and I'm afraid it could deter professors from wanting to work with me. So I was hoping to do the courses so that I could get better background needed. I have already been denied from all of the PhD programs I have applied to for ECE/CS/BME, but I did get accepted to the BME PhD program at the university I'm currently at. But the professors I want to work with the most arent answering my emails. They just ignore them, but do answer ppl with background that more closely aligns with their work.
Is there anyway I can get a scholarship to help me fund this? If it helps, I am a black female. Also, I'd prefer to do online programs rather than the courses offered at my university because they go extremely fast and it's hard for me to keep up, and I'd prefer something where I can do things on my own time, especially since I have health issues I'm currently dealing with

2023.03.25 16:25 eminem0609 Factors to consider while choosing school for MS ECE in the USA
Hi everyone, I am an international student from India and would like to hear your thoughts on how to go about choosing between schools for MS ECE. I will be graduating from my BS in 2023 and will be joining for the Fall 2023 cycle. I am interested in Comp-Arch, Digital VLSI and the likes. Down the line, I would like to work in front-end positions, like architect, rtl design or verification roles. Research is not a priority and the first priority is to get a job after graduating.
I am considering the following factors as of now:
- Coursework:
- flexibility in course structure
- whether courses of interest are offered
- whether co-ops are allowed
- professor reviews
- Cost:
- tuition + living
- number of opportunities for TA/RA
- whether TA/RA waives off tuition
- Location:
- closer to industry or not (basically in Cali/Texas or not)
- how large career fairs are at the uni
However, I do not know what factors should be given more precedence over the other. If it matters, I have received offers from UMich AA, UCSD, and CMU. I am grateful for any inputs on this matter.
Thank you for reading!

2023.03.25 15:08 Personal_Ad_1223 How to make the most of your PhD?
Hi everyone, I have been doing my PhD for almost a year and a half. There has been a lot of expectation to finish within the 3 years and as a result I have been encouraged to focus on my main project. My goal for my PhD is to branch out and gain a wide variety of transferrable skills and to contribute my ideas as much as I can but I have been told to stick to one task at a time in order to finish my PhD. I feel like I don't just want to make it to the finish line I want to keep building on my research ability. I am wondering if I am putting my PhD in Jeopardy by wanting to contribute to more projects rather than ones just directly related to my thesis or even conducting additional research that is related but isn't in the direction aims of the thesis? I have made good progress so far but I am just wondering what the best approach is as I would like to make the most of my PhD both to develop my skills as a researcher and to contribute to science.

2023.03.25 09:57 RelevantCobbler5549 What "top" Masters/PhD programs in the US/UK can I get in with a pure math undergrad?
Background: Graduated top of my program (University Medal) in pure maths from a top Australian University (GO8), and have been working in industry as a quantitative researcher for ~2-3 years now. I'm considering going back to do a a MS or PhD in CS, AI/ML, or statistics (or anything "technical" that is broadly related and that utilises applied math) to improve my career advancement opportunities; however, I'm concerned that I don't have the background to get into a competitive CS, statistics, etc. program (i.e. Harvard or Stanford) as I only ever a single CS classes and 1-2ish stats classes: a first year intro to econometrics class (used Python), intro to programming class (also python), and a 2nd year mathematical statistics class (actual rigorous proof based). Back in my undergrad, I did a bit of research in my and co-authored a few papers as at that point, I was pretty set in pursuing a PhD in pure maths in the US.
I code in C, Python, and can use R all pretty comfortably.
EDIT: My Honours thesis was to do with metric spaces, and I pretty much took ALL math courses (advanced, reading classes, some grad level courses) during Uni as back then I was pretty set on pursuing a pure math PhD.
Hope the information that I provided wasn't too vague as I'd like to avoid doxxing myself too hard, but feel free to let me know if I need to clarify or add on anything.

2023.03.25 07:02 No-Somewhere2820 [Q] Rate of addiction to prescription opiates in the United States
I am certain that this topic has been studied and the answer is out there since this is such a hot topic, but Google is being less than helpful with my queries. As an aside, if this has not been storied, this is a gift-wrapped PHD thesis.
The Question: I would like to know if it is possible to take the amount of opiates that have been prescribed in the US, say over the last 20 years which is public info, and extrapolate what percent of those people wound up in addiction and further dieting from an overdose. My guess would be a single digit number, but I would love to know some real numbers.
The Situation: My wife and a friend of ours just finished an argument about the effects of opiates. My waif is under the impression that more than 50% of people who use opiates will become addicted, rock bottom, and died. My friend said no way, if something kills more than half of the people who use it, no one would use it. They went back and forth and the conversation became unproductive. I stayed out of it, but I would assume that my friend is right.
The only google results I real see are "deaths are up .... deaths are up", but that is not the question. I would think that some risk/benefit analysis was done and someone (maybe the FDA) already knows that there is a X% chance that if someone takes opiates they will become addicted. That number must have been small enough that they approved the drug for use anyway.

2023.03.25 04:52 Redditerianism UCSD MS BIOE VS RICE BIOE MBE for reputation and job opportunity
Hi all!
I need to make choice between UCSD MS Bioe (Thesis) vs Rice Bioe MBE.
I am interested in going to industry after masters degree, and I am open to all concentrations. (I would prefer synthetic and systems biology if there is industry in this field though)
I was curious which masters program would be better in terms of job opportunity. If any of you knows about this program, do you know which concentration are they famous for?

2023.03.24 22:11 myelin-symphony Graduate school in neuroscience: Is it too late? What should I do to improve my chances?
-I am a junior at a state school. Not a prestigious university by any means, but it has a pretty decent neuroscience program.
-I was homeschooled before college with no STEM education, and then studied abroad on a free, competitive government-funded program to learn Arabic. I decided to major in Linguistics and Arabic.
-In my first year I only took Linguistics and Arabic courses. I also had minors in Spanish and Philosophy. I then took courses on Biolinguistics, Language and the Brain, and Psycholinguistics, as well as a gen ed about neuroscience. These were my favorite courses and I got very high As. The neuroscience gen ed professor encouraged me to major in neuroscience. I was very enthusiastic in my agreement so I added the major.
-Everything was difficult at first. I had had a 4.0, but lost it due to Gen Chem (which I audited at first and still got a C in), a molecular biology course, algebra, and my intro neuroscience course. I chose my university's "cognitive science" focus (rather than neurobiology) to avoid harder classes. I got to take several courses in cognitive science.
-I improved greatly and switched to neurobiology focus, scoring As in courses such as cellular electroneurophysiology and courses on the molecular mechanisms of memory, learning, neural development, programming, etc.
-I added minors in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Consciousness Studies. I took 30+ units simultaneously to do this. One semester I got a 4.0 doing this.
-I got work in a lab studying neurolinguistics and psycholinguistics in Sophomore year. However due to some conflicts in the lab I quit after a year and moved to a lab studying sleep and insomnia using fMRI.
-I got into a summer research program, did psychology research, and presented at Society for Neuroscience (SFN) and other conferences.
-I got into the same program, will go this summer. I have not been told which lab I will be in yet but I requested a Parkinson's genetics lab and an optogenetics lab.
-I also did several neuroscience-related things such as interning for a local neuroscience education center, serving as a "neuroscience ambassador", preceptoring for a course, etc.
-Now I am having a rough semester. I have been diagnosed with a brain lesion (yes yes it's ironic you can laugh) and have been having numerous health issues. I started out with 32 units, but the chemistry course I was in was not going well and was time-consuming (the course schedule said the course was at a certain time, and didn't specify that the lab and exams and quizzes would be in-person at a completely different time, so I dropped). I am also in a cellular neuroscience course and I am actively failing. I am expected to memorize dozens of pathways and then replicate and apply them on exams that are exclusively "free-response" with no multiple choice and which are graded stringently. I may have to audit the course as I am not doing well and can get at best a C at this point. I am in many other classes, I am acing two graduate-level linguistics courses, two molecular neuroscience courses, a bioethics course etc, but failing a class for the first time.
-Switched back to cognitive science to take more courses on the neural correlates of topics such as drug addiction, bilingualism, etc rather than more chemistry and physics. May switch back if it is necessary for grad schools.
-Set to take more neuro courses such as neuroanatomy and Ephys lab next semester and I hear they are not exam-based so I know I can get an A but I am very scared for my physics course etc as I struggle with this kind of thing.
-GPA is 3.81
-Not enough courses in neuroscience; in my freshman year I studied only humanities and my scholarship requires me to take a course in Arabic and a course in Middle Eastern Studies each semester.
-No publications yet.
-Will present at SFN again
-Will do honors thesis in cognitive neuroscience
-I do have other activities and extracurriculars (worked as a dorm RA, worked restaurant jobs, have a radio show at the student radio, was part of a folklorico dance group for a few years, volunteered with a search and rescue group for awhile etc.)
What do y'all think? I want to do a PhD in COGNITIVE neuroscience (I am interested in linguistic processing, learning and memory, and the neural correlates of consciousness as well as neuroaesthetics and musical procession) but I truly want to work with "wet lab" techniques as I find these more empirically valuable and more fascinating than most techniques in psychology; I LOVE chemistry and molecular biology on a conceptual level, I just struggle greatly with exams in those classes because I have a very poor memory no matter how long or how hard I study.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
